  • TIME：China Vaccine Scandal Prompts Angry Backlash From Parents and Doctors
    TIME reports: "Furious parents and health care professionals in China are demanding to know how almost $90 million of improperly stored and potentially fatal vaccines were distributed across some two-thirds of the country over the past five years,...According to state media, a mother and daughter from eastern China's Shandong province have been caught peddling 25 kinds of unrefrigerated vaccines — including for polio, mumps, rabies, hepatitis B, encephalitis and meningococcal diseases — to medical facilities across 24 Chinese provinces since 2010. Inflaming the public backlash, authorities had apparently known about the case since last April, though only publicized the news late Friday in a belated attempt to trace potential victims."
  • The New York Times：Report Ties Coal Plants to Water Shortage in Northern China
    The New York Times reports: "A decades-long drought in northern China — home to the bulk of the country's coal production and consumption — is worsening, and the central and local governments are grappling with massive desertification....Greenpeace said the continuing burning of coal for power plants and factories in northern China, along with the growth of the coal-to-chemicals industry, is exacerbating the water crisis. In much of northern China, people are using water faster than it can be regenerated, Greenpeace said, 'posing a serious threat to local ecology.'"
  • Reuters：China says Philippine fishermen used fire bombs in South China Sea
    Reuters reports: "Philippine fishermen threw fire bombs at Chinese law enforcement vessels in the South China Sea, China's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, after Philippine media said fishermen had been struck by bottles hurled from Chinese coast guard ships....Philippine media said this week that a group of fishermen had been chased away from Scarborough Shoal by Chinese coast guards who hurled bottles at them. The fishermen then responded with rocks, the reports said. Asked about the incident, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Scarborough Shoal - known by Beijing as Huangyan Island - was Chinese territory which Philippine fishermen had been fishing around illegally."
