Reuters reports: "China resumed ties with former Taiwan ally Gambia on Thursday, ending an unofficial diplomatic truce between China and Taiwan following January's landslide election of the leader of a pro-independence party as the self-ruled island's president....While Gambia severed relations with Taiwan in November 2013, causing anger in Taipei, China had held off establishing formal ties with it until now. 'From here on, China and Gambia's relations have turned over a new leaf,' Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Gambian counterpart, Neneh Macdouall-Gaye, China's Foreign Ministry said in a statement."
BBC News reports: "A senior Chinese official has said it is 'impossible' for Hong Kong to become a sovereign state....Following the 2014 mass pro-democracy protests, a small but growing number of people in Hong Kong have pushed for greater independence from China, giving rise to what is known as the 'localist' movement....Qiao Xiaoyang, head of China's parliamentary law committee, was addressing queries from reporters on Wednesday as the annual meeting of China's parliamentary National People's Congress drew to a close. Asked what he thought of calls for Hong Kong's independence, Mr Qiao responded saying it was 'impossible' and asked: 'How could Hong Kong be independent?'"
CNN reports: "For months, Republican frontrunner Donald Trump has repeatedly targeted China on the campaign trail, pledging to put tariffs on goods produced overseas and bring things like iPhone production back to the United States....With Trump securing major victories on the road to the White House, China issued a scathing criticism of the U.S. election process and the candidate who has 'opened a Pandora's box in U.S. society.'...it goes on to imply that the Republican party lost control of Trump -- who has now become the party's worst nightmare."
