Focus This Week
A community space to discuss the China-U.S. relationship and beyond.

Dear Focus Reader,

On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the need for a collaborative relationship between China and the United States, stating that both nations should act as partners that enhance each other's development rather than serve as obstacles.

"China is willing to be a partner and friend with the United States," he said in remarks addressed to the 2024 annual awards dinner of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations. "This will benefit not only the two countries, but the world."

During the gala, Ambassador Xie Feng echoed Xi's sentiments, urging both countries to pool their wisdom to advance bilateral relations. He reflected on the historical context of U.S.-China interactions, noting that past cooperation has resulted in beneficial outcomes for both sides and contributed to global stability. Xie also emphasized the need for open dialogue, especially in the face of challenges such as trade disputes and security concerns.

The statements come just weeks before the U.S. presidential elections. While China has been seemingly lacking in the campaign discourse, experts increasingly agree on the necessity of enhancing people-to-people ties and cultural exchange to foster mutual understanding and reduce tensions.

And just this week, the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington welcomed giant pandas Bao Li and Qing Bao, in a symbol of the potential for renewed engagement. The return of giant pandas to the U.S. has been celebrated as a significant cultural exchange, providing a unique opportunity for soft diplomacy and to reconnect the American public with China.

Quote of the Week
"The next [U.S.] President's decisions on China policy could ironically upend von der Leyen's plans, forcing her to adopt a more conciliatory approach. If a new U.S. administration implements a radically different strategy toward China—or Europe itself—it could undermine her efforts, leaving Europe vulnerable and without a coherent plan."
