Dear Focus Reader,
Chinese President Xi Jinping marked the People's Republic of China's 75th anniversary this week with a speech reflecting on the country's progress and its future challenges. Speaking at a banquet in Beijing, Xi highlighted two key accomplishments: China's rapid economic growth and its long-term social stability. He emphasized that these achievements are part of the "irreversible" rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, reinforcing his belief in the strength of the CPC's leadership and the country's socialist system.
However, Xi's tone was cautious as he warned of "rough seas" ahead. He urged the nation to remain vigilant, noting that while China has made significant strides, it must be prepared to face potential dangers, such as economic difficulties, geopolitical tensions, and even military threats. He also reiterated China's goal of reunification with Taiwan, calling it "inevitable."
The relatively subdued tone of the event was evident, marked by a lack of large-scale festivities compared to past milestones. Analysts have suggested the restrained atmosphere reflects the country's current economic struggles, including a housing crisis and a slow post-pandemic recovery.
Leaders from around the world, including France's Emmanuel Macron and South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa, sent congratulatory messages to Xi, reflecting global acknowledgment of China's achievements. Macron noted that 2024 marks not only the PRC's 75th anniversary but also the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and China. He expressed a desire to strengthen cooperation and dialogue between Europe and China. Other leaders echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing their countries' commitment to continued partnerships with China.
The United States also sent a message of congratulations, but it notably came a day later than the State Department's previous notes traditionally sent on the actual anniversary.
The milestone year also coincides with the 45th anniversary of normalized relations between China and the U.S. "The relationship is again at a new starting point," said China's Ambassador to the U.S., Xie Feng. He added that "mutual respect means we need to be partners, not rivals. Peaceful coexistence means we need to hold on to the baselines and avoid backpedaling. Win-win cooperation means we need to seek mutual benefit and reject a zero-sum game."
