Dear Focus Reader,
Next week, U.S. President Biden and Chinese President Xi are set to meet in San Francisco on the sidelines of the APEC Summit. The meeting is expected to cover various issues, including tensions in U.S.-China relations, regional security concerns, and other global challenges, providing an opportunity for high-level diplomatic discussions between the two leaders.
This anticipated meeting comes after a series of bilateral diplomatic efforts between the two countries, including a two-day meeting this week between U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and her Chinese counterpart He Lifeng, during which they agreed to "intensify communication."
Leading up to the APEC Summit, the China-United States Exchange Foundation hosted its annual Hong Kong Forum on U.S.-China Relations this week, aimed at fostering dialogue and collaboration between global leaders, officials, and scholars.
The forum included sessions covering a range of topics including trade and economy, science and technology, people-to-people exchanges, climate change, public health and food security, geopolitics, and international security. CUSEF was honored to welcome luminaries and guest speakers including Charlene Barshefsky, Max Baucus, Stephen Roach, and other renowned experts, Heads of State, Nobel Laureates, and more. Titled Change and Progress, the Forum opened with remarks from the U.S. Ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns, and the Chinese Ambassador to the U.S, Xie Feng.
