  • The New York Times reports: "An American warship sailed on Tuesday within 12 miles of an artificial island built by China in the South China Sea, an operation intended to show that the United States opposes China's efforts to restrict navigation in the strategic waterway, the Pentagon said. The warship, the William P. Lawrence, a guided missile destroyer, ventured into the vicinity of Fiery Cross Reef, a 700-acre artificial island China constructed in the last 18 months on top of two small rocks....Cmdr. Bill Urban, a spokesman for the Pentagon, said in a statement that the William P. Lawrence 'exercised right of innocent passage' as it transited within 12 miles of Fiery Cross Reef."
  • The Associated Press reports: "Chinese President Xi Jinping extended his congratulations Tuesday to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on his new title of chairman of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, underscoring traditional ties between the communist neighbors despite recent strains. Writing in his personal capacity and as head of China's ruling Communist Party, Xi expressed hope that Kim's leadership would bring 'new accomplishments in the cause of building socialism,' China's official Xinhua News Agency reported. Ties between China and North Korea were 'personally forged and carefully fostered by the two countries' leaderships of the older generation and is a treasure for both sides,' Xi wrote, according to Xinhua."
  • The Wall Street Journal reports: "The Chinese Communist Party has a 'Trump problem.' No—not in the sense that Donald Trump's protectionist trade ideas send shivers down its spine, even though they do. Rather, the party is grappling with a similar force that swept Mr. Trump to his position as the Republican Party's presumptive nominee for president, and that fuels rabble-rousing politicians all across Europe: populism. As the Chinese economy drastically slows, threatening jobs, it empowers the populists on the Communist Party's fringe—neo-Maoist dreamers and ideologues who believe that their leaders aren't doing enough for the poor and dispossessed."
