Tariffs on imports of solar cells and panels into the US, announced by the Trump administration, will slow the growth of the market and cost tens of thousands of jobs, the industry has warned.
US companies that use panels as project developers and installers and the Asian companies that make them were dismayed by the plan to impose a tariff, starting at 30 per cent and then stepping down over the next four years, to protect domestic manufacturers.
The decision was taken by President Donald Trump on Monday following an investigation by the US International Trade Commission last year, under a rarely used power to take action if imports caused “serious injury” to a domestic industry.
