  • The New York Times reports: "China announced Friday that it planned to impose tariffs on $3 billion worth of American-produced fruit, pork, wine, seamless steel pipes and more than 100 other goods, hitting back at the United States hours after President Trump proposed tariffs on about $60 billion worth of Chinese-made products. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce issued the threat in an online statement that said its proposed measures retaliated against the Trump administration's earlier decision to impose tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum. The timing, though, also appeared to be a warning shot against Mr. Trump's latest action on the trade front, on Thursday, when he took specific aim at a much wider range of Chinese products."
  • CNBC reports: "President Donald Trump's recent actions, from controversial trade tariffs to installing John Bolton as national security advisor, could hurt U.S. foreign policy goals in North Korea and Iran. Trump's decision to impose duties on up to $60 billion worth of Chinese imports, for example, comes at a time when Washington needs Beijing's help to rein in a nuclear-armed Pyongyang... The U.S. has long pressed Chinese President Xi Jinping's government to apply more pressure on the rogue state in the hopes of bringing North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to the negotiating table."
  • An op-ed by Catherine Rampell in The Washington Post comments: "For years, U.S. companies — as well as foreign ones — have been victims of Chinese intellectual property rights policies, including being forced to hand over their technology if they wanted access to the Chinese market. But there's a smart way and a dumb way to deal with this misbehavior. Unfortunately, in its pursuit of sweeping new tariffs on Chinese imports, the Trump administration is once again choosing the dumb way — as markets suggested when they closed down nearly 3 percent on Thursday...Our best hope is that Trump doesn't actually mean to follow through on these tariffs — or, alternatively, won't notice if his own administration gradually walks them back."
