  • Politico comments: "A decade after Wilbur Ross used a tariff on imported steel to weather Chinese competition and make his American mills profitable, he hung a picture taken in Beijing on his office wall...As Donald Trump's pick to lead the Commerce Department, the billionaire investor will be tasked with implementing the president-elect's promise to get tough on China. But since making his first fortune by going to war against Chinese steel in the early years of the 21st century, Ross has become a devoted Sinophile. In addition to assembling a formidable collection of Chinese art -- some 200 pieces in total, according to one profile -- he has partnered in shipping and energy ventures with Chinese state-owned firms, contributed to relief efforts after the country's devastating 2008 earthquake and even compared the Chinese Communist Party's five-year plans to the United States' industrial policy."
  • Wall Street Journal reports: "President-elect Donald Trump on Monday criticized North Korea and China in two Twitter posts, again using the social-media platform as a way of shaping his foreign-policy message. In his first tweet, Mr. Trump remarked on news over the weekend that North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un had said his government was completing preparations for a test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, which could be the next stage in developing a nuclear weapon that could strike portions of the U.S. 'North Korea just stated that it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the U.S.,' an item on Mr. Trump's Twitter account stated. 'It won't happen!' Less than an hour later, Mr. Trump blamed Beijing for not cracking down on North Korea's development of nuclear weapons. That Twitter message said, 'China has been taking out massive amounts of money & wealth from the U.S. in totally one-sided trade, but won't help with North Korea. Nice!' Mr. Trump frequently criticizes China through his Twitter account, in contrast with Russia, whose leadership he has taken to defending or praising."

  • Reuters reports: "China's sole aircraft carrier conducted drills in the South China Sea, the navy said, days after neighboring Taiwan said the carrier and accompanying ships had passed 90 nautical miles south of the island amid renewed tension between the two sides. The Soviet-built Liaoning aircraft carrier and accompanying warships sailed round the east coast of Taiwan in what China called a routine exercise complying with international law. The carrier's J-15 fighters conducted flight exercises in 'complex sea conditions' on Monday, the People's Liberation Army Navy said on its official microblog late the same day. The carrier group also ran helicopter exercises, it said, but did not give details on the exact location...The drills also come at a time of heightened strain with self-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own, following U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's telephone call with the island's president that upset Beijing."
