  • BBC News reports: "The Chinese government has promised to punish 357 officials over a scandal involving the illegal sale of vaccines. State media say 192 criminal cases have been filed. Improperly stored or transported vaccines were allegedly sent to 59 health institutions. The government has said it will tighten procedures around vaccine-handling....China's State Council said 357 officials faced demotion or losing their jobs and that 202 had been detained so far. Health authorities have also urged people to continue coming forward for vaccinations."
  • The New York Times reports: "The Chinese government announced on Wednesday that a group of Taiwanese citizens who were deported to China from Kenya would be prosecuted on charges of telecommunications fraud despite having been acquitted of the same charges by a Kenyan court this month....The Taiwanese citizens arrived in Beijing on Wednesday, hooded and handcuffed, after being forced onto a plane by Kenyan police officers. Taiwanese legislators accused the Kenyan government of violating international law and its own laws to placate China. They noted that the citizens had been cleared of charges of involvement in a large telecommunications fraud ring based in Kenya."
  • NPR reports: "The U.S. and the Philippines have recently conducted joint patrols through the disputed South China Sea, Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Thursday, and plan to do so again....Carter said the patrols and increased military support are intended to 'tamp down tensions'...Gazmi, meanwhile, said the U.S. presence 'will deter uncalled-for actions by the Chinese.'...So far the U.S. has conducted two joint patrols with the Philippines in the disputed area...and plans to 'continue regular joint patrols.'"
