The PLA Navy harbors no ambitions to control these straits, but it doesn’t want the straits to be controlled by others, either. The psychological effect of a Chinese carrier offshore would help “to subdue the enemy without using force”.

Having enjoyed the fruits of globalization as it has built its strong economy, China has assumed more responsibility in the world. Its military operations overseas have been humanitarian in nature, from disaster relief, peacekeeping, countering piracy and evacuation of personnel. China’s neutral but all-round approach to the Syrian issue, when it has no self-interest, suggests how a stronger China might act in the days to come.

Such a pledge doesn’t cripple other countries’ nuclear capabilities: It boosts confidence that a world free of nuclear weapons is eventually possible.

This US defense installation would offer no real protection from the North’s usable weaponry, and would surely provoke the DPRK into a new, vicious cycle of action vs. reaction. The idea has already stirred strong protests from the Chinese and Russian governments, which believe THAAD, if deployed, will threaten their security interests. The idea of deploying THAAD on Korean soil is a bad example of how anger and angst can overpower and replace rational response.
