On January 9, the U.S. Department of State hosted the 11th U.S.-China Young Scientist Forum (YSF), which focused this year on environmental health. Scientists from American research and policy institutions met with their Chinese counterparts in Washington, D.C. to exchange views on how scientists can work together with the public to address environmental health issues in both countries.
These early career scientists explored how public engagement and the participation of citizen scientists can support better data collection and analysis, inform the public about environmental health risks, and develop meaningful strategies to reduce hazardous pollutants in air, water, and soil.
During their 10-day stay in the United States, the nine Chinese science professionals will meet with experts in policy making and research in Washington D.C.; Research Triangle Park, North Carolina; and Indianapolis, Indiana. The YSF scientists are in the United States on the International Visitor Leadership Program, administered by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
The YSF is an outcome of the science and technology working group of the U.S.-China Consultation on People-to-People Exchange (CPE), which last met in Beijing in June 2016. The CPE aims to enhance exchanges between the citizens of the United States and China in education, culture, sports, women’s issues, health, and science and technology. The YSF is part of the U.S. government’s efforts to enhance and strengthen ties between the United States and China in the areas of education, sports, culture, health, women’s issues, and science and technology. Participants were nominated and selected for this program by staff at the U.S. embassy and consulates in China.
