China Should Do More to Keep Peace in Middle East, Says Former US Envoy

A top U.S. specialist in Middle Eastern affairs has called on China to work with the United States in maintaining stability in the volatile region and helping calm global oil markets.

Martin Indyk, a former American ambassador to Israel and now vice president at the Brookings Institution, said that China had even more at stake than the U.S., which has been shedding its dependency on imported energy while Beijing remains highly reliant on Mideast oil.

“China has an interest in the free flow of oil at reasonable prices,” he told an academic gathering earlier this week, adding that the U.S. maintains forces in the region to provide stability at a considerable cost to American taxpayers.
